Inside a Division I Practice
XP Elite players, parents, and coaches visited the Texas A&M–Corpus Christi Islanders for an inside look at how a Division I basketball program prepares and develops its athletes.
On July 22, XP Elite players, parents, and coaches had the opportunity to attend a Texas A&M–Corpus Christi Islanders men’s basketball team practice.
Families from our 10U, 12U, and tournament teams joined us for a behind-the-scenes look at how a Division I basketball program approaches its work. It was an opportunity to see that high level basketball is built through much more than talent. It requires preparation, communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to doing ordinary things at an exceptional level.
From the beginning of practice, our players were able to observe the pace, organization, and purpose behind each part of the session. Every drill had a clear objective. Coaches taught with energy and precision, while players communicated, competed, and remained engaged throughout the practice.
For our boys, the experience offered a glimpse into what basketball looks like at the next level. They saw skilled college athletes being coached, corrected, challenged, and held accountable. They also saw that even Division I players continue to work on fundamentals, listen closely, and repeat the details necessary to improve.
The visit was about more than watching from the sidelines. Our players enjoyed snacks, were introduced to members of the Islanders program, and had the opportunity to interact with and shoot alongside players after practice. Those moments made the experience especially memorable and allowed our boys to connect with athletes competing at a level many of them aspire to reach.
The day was also valuable for the XP Elite coaching staff.
Our coaches used the opportunity to speak with Division I coaches and staff members, ask questions, and learn more about how an elite program organizes practices, communicates expectations, develops players, and creates a competitive environment.
The goal is not to copy a college practice and place it in front of young athletes. Our responsibility is to identify the principles behind an elite program and apply them in ways that are appropriate, challenging, and effective for the players we coach.
Experiences like this help XP Elite continue to grow. They expose our players to higher standards, give families a clearer picture of the development process, and challenge our coaches to continue learning.
We are grateful to the Texas A&M–Corpus Christi Islanders men’s basketball program for welcoming XP Elite and giving our families an opportunity to look behind the curtain.
It was an exciting and educational day for our organization, and one that will influence how we continue to approach training, preparation, and player development.
EARNED. EVERYDAY.
